Dalton Schultz signs a one-year deal with the Houston Texans

With the Dallas Cowboys digging themselves into a hole of cap space, they have let Dalton Schultz go in free agency. Schultz signed a one-year deal worth up to $9 million with the Houston Texans on Monday, according to Tom Pelissero. He will become the Texans’ new No. 1 tight end and one of their top targets on offense.

After a five-year career with the Cowboys, they have opted not to bring back Schultz after problems with cap space.

The Dallas Cowboys drafted Schultz, 26, in the 2018 NFL draft. They picked him in the fourth round with the No. 137 pick. Schultz played three years at Stanford for the Cardinal until his senior season where declared for the NFL Draft. Schultz didn’t play his freshman season with the Cardinal. As a sophomore, Schultz had 10 catches for 121 yards and a touchdown. During his final two years, Schultz had very similar seasons. He had almost identical statistics in his junior and senior seasons, racking up 45 combined catches for 434 receiving yards and four touchdowns.

After becoming a crucial part of America’s team’s offense, Schultz has now entered a new chapter of his NFL career, departing the only NFL franchise he’s ever known. In 2022, he caught 57 passes (on 89 targets) for 577 receiving yards and five touchdowns, one of the more down years of Schultz’s career. In the course of his five-year career, he has posted 211 catches for 2,100 receiving yards and 17 touchdowns, all of which have come within the last three seasons.
